Walking for Health

Active Derbyshire & Walking for Health

Walking for Health groups are being set up across the district, as part of a county-wide initiative to get the nation walking!

We have teamed up with Natural England and NHS Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust to launch a series of free group walking sessions.

The walks last between 30 and 90 minutes, and are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Anyone can turn up and join in it's free and fun!

Why should I walk?

Walking in a group is a great way to start walking and to stay motivated. You'll make friends, discover new places in your neighbourhood and feel better for being more active and don't forget walking regularly can:

  • Reduce stress
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase energy
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Help manage your weight
  • Keep your heart strong

Walk, Lead, Volunteer...

We are looking for volunteers to lead health walks throughout the district. You will have the opportunity to complete a one-day training course, free of charge, covering topics including:

  • How to lead a Walking for Health session
  • The benefits of exercise, and barriers to activity
  • Risk Assessments
  • Information about specific medical conditions
  • How the natural environment can benefit health & wellbeing.
  • Once the training is completed you will receive a Walk Leader certificate and manual.

We will be running training days in the new year and there are other planned training dates throughout the county, so please register your interest, by contacting Kelly Massey.

Interested in attending a local Walking for Health group?

All of our walks are open to all levels of ability, in some cases our walks may not be suitable for wheelchair users please refer to information supplied to each walk. Whichever walk you do decide on it will be led by a qualified Walk Leader and will have a social element attached to the session before hand so you can sit and have a chat with a cuppa.

You will be asked to fill out a short Outdoor Health Questionnaire and you will be given a form to apply for a Just do More! card. Also why not try logging your activity with your own on line personal diary at Active Derbyshire.

Interested in setting up a Walking for Health group for your organisation or clients?

We will help support the start up of any new Walking for Health group within the district and  we will be able to provide guidance and publicity materials for you and your group.

There are several Walking for Health groups already up and running (or walking!) Below is a list of all the current Walking for Health groups, please keep a look out for further groups being added to the list.

Moving On Walks

Moving on Walks are for those that wish to walk that little bit further. These walks are up and downhill and may not always be on the best terrain so we encourage all walkers to wear appropriate footwear at all times. The walks last around 1 hour & 30 minutes and are between 3/4 miles in length. Below is a current list of all the Moving On Walks.

All of our groups where possible are suitable for wheelchair users and push chairs. Please check with the relevant group before you attend.

Remember, walking is a great opportunity to get outdoors, improve your health and become more active. It a great activity to get all the family involved with including the dog... although they won't be able to collect the loyalty points!
