Swimming Lessons - Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can I bring my child swimming?
The Amateur Swimming Association and health professionals recommend that infants do not swim until they are at least 4 months old and have completed all their initial injections. Introduce very young children to the water gradually starting with short visits lasting no more than 10 – 15 minutes in the water. Bring a towel onto poolside to wrap your baby in when you leave the water and buy some swim nappies to be worn in the pool (available at the centre reception).
What age can my child come swimming unaccompanied?
All children under the age of 8 years should be accompanied by an adult (16 years +). An adult can only take two 4 - 8 year olds swimming at any one time. Any child under the age of 4 needs to be accompanied on a one – one basis (unless the swimming session states otherwise).
What is the ASA National Plan For Teaching Swimming?
The NPTS has been developed by the ASA to provide a template for learn to swim schemes. It has been designed to assist qualified teachers whose own experience and training will enhance the implementation of the plan. The plan is based on gradual progression; it is not just about swimming extreme distances but ultimately swimming them well.
