Waste Minimisation
In North East Derbyshire, we produce about 32,000 tonnes of household waste per year. Nationally, household waste is increasing by around 3% each year. The amount of waste collected could double over the next 20 years. At the moment, most of our waste goes to landfill sites (tips) which are quickly filling up and running out.
We now need to change the way how we think and deal with our waste. The Council is taking steps to help its residents to reduce waste and the Government has set targets for each Council in the country.
To meet these targets, we need your help:
- To reduce your waste
- To re-use whatever materials you can
- To recycle all of your glass bottles and jars, newspapers and magazines, cans, plastic etc
- To home compost kitchen and garden waste.
How Can I Recycle More of My Waste?
The Council has already introduced several schemes to help residents recycle more of their household waste and more are to follow. These are:
- Blue Boxes - To recycle all of your glass bottles, jars, tins, cans and linens etc
- Blue Bags - To recycle all of your papers, magazines and catalogues
- Composting Bins - To compost your garden waste and vegetable matter
- Bring Sites - Use your local site to recycle paper, cans, glass and textiles

How Can I Reduce My Waste?
There are several ways we can reduce the amount we throw away and here are a just a few examples:
- You can substantially reduce the amount of ‘junk mail’ you receive by registering your name to opt out of such schemes.
- Use washable nappies – they are easy to use and could save you money.
- Composting suitable garden and kitchen waste such as grass cuttings, vegetable leaves and peelings, tea bags and leaves is the most natural form of recycling that can be done at home and is good for your garden too.
How Can I Re-use My Waste?
- Re-use glass bottles - buy drinks in glass bottles rather than plastic. Return returnable bottles. Support your local milk delivery person.
- Re-use containers for the freezer, microwave, pet food dishes and seed trays or for craft activities.
- Cut up old clothes and bedding to use as cleaning cloths
