Parking Fines

This page gives information about the

Parking Fines

North East Derbyshire District Council is responsible for enforcing parking regulations in its car parks throughout the district.

Drivers who park irresponsibly, who don't comply with car park regulations can expect to receive a parking ticket.

Many people don't see parking fines as being of any real importance, but non-payment of a fine could lead to considerable cost to the vehicle owner, a County Court case and ultimately a visit from the Bailiffs! It is easy to avoid this through considerate and lawful parking, and prompt payment of fines if you do get caught out.

Paying a Parking Fine

When a parking ticket is issued it is the registered owner of the vehicle, not the driver, that is responsible for paying the fine (or appealing against the ticket if it is disputed).

The current cost of a parking ticket is £30, although this is reduced to £15 if the fine is paid within 14 days. It is important to know that the longer the fine remains unpaid, the higher the cost is likely to be.

Payments for parking fines may be made in person at Council's Main Office on Saltergate in Chesterfield on Monday - Friday from 8.45am - 4.30pm or one of the other area cash offices. To find out the location of these other offices or for further information on alternative payment options please contact the call centre CONNECT NORTHEAST (details at bottom of page).

Appealing Against Your Parking Fine

No-one likes getting a parking ticket, but the Council can only cancel a ticket when it is justifiable and reasonable to do so. If you feel that you have a good case for appealing against your fine, you should not pay the fine but should make an initial appeal to the Council in one of the following ways:

Remember, it is the registered owner of the vehicle that should make any appeal against a parking ticket, and not the person who was in charge of the vehicle at the time.

DON'T DELAY!

If you appeal within 14 days of the ticket being issued the reduced charge of £15 will still apply for a further 14 days if your appeal is rejected. If you leave it too late the full £30 charge will be payable.

Of course, if your appeal is accepted we will cancel the parking ticket.

A decision will be made on all appeals within 10 working days of receipt.

Non-Payment of Parking Fines

If a fine remains outstanding for 28 days after it was issued, or after an appeal was rejected, the Council will issue a notice to the owner of the vehicle. This will provide a final chance to either pay the fine or make an appeal.

Further non-payment may lead to the charge being substantially increased and registered with the County Court. Once this stage has been reached the debt may be passed to a certificated Bailiff company for them to collect; they can add their own charges to the original fine amount and the Council has no control over how much that could be.

Don't forget, if you are wanting to appeal against the ticket your initial contact must either be in writing or by using our online Initial Parking Fine Appeal Form.
