Temporary Road Closures

There are many reasons why a road may need to be closed to traffic such as road works, sporting events, street markets, street parties, carnivals, parades and marches.

Road works and emergency closures, as well as closures for events such as major road races, are dealt with by Derbyshire County Council. Other closures are usually dealt with by us.

Where a road is to be closed for a public event to be held, a Traffic Regulation Order will normally be needed.

Where possible, we encourage you to hold your event on private property, in public parks or on public car parks to avoid disruption to road users and emergency services. Where such alternatives are not possible, we will take into account the disruption to traffic, pedestrians and public transport, and must be satisfied that the Police, bus companies, local residents and businesses that would be affected by the closure have been consulted.

Full details of how to apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, along with the forms required, are available to download below. Event organisers should apply at least 12 weeks before the date of the event to allow time for the application to be processed.

Remembrance day parades are classed as statutory parades and as such are managed by the police.

Temporary Car Park Closures

You may need to apply to us for a Temporary Car Park Closure if you want to use all or part of an NEDDC public car park for your event. This is an easier and cheaper option than a road closure.

Licences/Permits

You may need a Temporary Event Notice if you want to sell alcohol, provide certain types of entertainment or serve hot food and drinks after 11pm. If you are planning on fundraising at your event, you might also need to get a Street Collection Licence from us.

Public Liability Insurance

For any event on NEDDC land or a public highway, we insist that the organiser of an event has public liability insurance for a minimum of £5,000,000.

If you are planning an event on the road or on a car park and would like an informal chat about your options or have any queries please contact the Engineering Division (details below).
