Abandoned Vehicles
Abandoned vehicles are unsightly and can cause an obstruction, they are often dangerous, encourage vandalism and arson.
As part of our Don't Stand For It campaign against enviro-crime we are working to clear abandoned vehicles from the streets and countryside of North East Derbyshire.
What are abandoned vehicles?
Any untaxed or apparently unwanted vehicle (car, motorbike, van, lorry etc) that has been left in a public place (including the highway) is considered to be abandoned and we have a duty to remove it.
If a vehicle is abandoned on private land we can only take action if the landowner confirms that they want it to be removed.
What can we do?
We work closely with the police and DVLA to identify any vehicle that appears to have been abandoned. We will contact the owner to ask them to remove their vehicle or explain why they have left it where it is.
We may serve a notice giving the owner between 24 hours and 7 days to remove it (depending on the condition of the vehicle). If the vehicle is burnt out, a wreck, in a dangerous position or may cause harm where it is, we will act to have it removed within 24 hours. Otherwise a 7 day notice is served.
If the vehicle hasn't been removed and the owner has not been in touch we can have it taken away and eventually disposed of - the last known owner may be charged for the cost of the removal and may even be prosecuted - with a fine of up to £2500.
Our vehicle removal contractor uses state of the art equipment to make sure all vehicles are dismantled in the most environmentally friendly way, with most of the components recycled.
How can you help?
Firstly, if you need to get rid of an unwanted vehicle, don't just leave it for someone else to take away. You may end up with a hefty bill for removal of the vehicle and a fine to boot.
If you believe a vehicle has been abandoned please let us know. Details we need to know include the location, make and model of the vehicle, and registration number if you have it. If you happen to know when/how long ago the vehicle was abandoned, and details of the owner or responsible person please let us know. Don't worry if you don't have all this information, but the more you can tell us the more likely it is that we can take action.
Contact us with the details as soon as possible, all information is dealt with in the strictest confidence and personal details will not be released to the offender. We will contact you to discuss your complaint and will keep you informed of what action we intend to take.
