Discarded Syringes/Needles

Syringes are commonly referred to as “sharps” which is the collective name for hyperdermic needles, syringes and other objects that have potential to cause harm through skin puncture and infection.

Where Might I Find a Syringe or Needle?

Syringes or needles can be found in many places, such as:

  • Houses, Gardens, Highways, Footpaths, Car Parks, Bus Stations, Public Toilets, Parks and playgrounds, Sports grounds.

What to do if you find a syringe?

  • DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!!
  • DO NOT let friends touch it
  • DO NOT put it in a dustbin or litter bin
  • DO NOT put it down the toilet
  • DO NOT put it down the drain

If you are a child TELL AN ADULT e.g. your parents, police officer or teacher.

A discarded syringe is usually collected within 2 hours but if you feel you want to help we suggest that you take the following steps while waiting for the item to be collected:

  • Find a suitable container, preferably metal.  It can be a can or even a hard plastic bottle.

  • Wear heavy-duty gloves and pick up the syringe using tongs or tweezers not scissors

  • Pick up the syringe in the centre of the barrel

  • Hold the tongs / tweezers in one hand and container in the other at arms length.  In a horizontal position place the object sharp end first into the container.

  • Turn the container vertically and let the syringe drop into the container.  If the container has a cap put it on.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly

  • Keep the syringe safe until it is collected.
