Litter Enforcement

Have you ever thrown a drinks can on the street thinking that it won’t matter because the Council will pick it up in the morning? Or left a half eaten burger on a wall because its biodegradable? Or allowed your pet to foul a public place?

That’s alright, isn’t it? No it isn’t.

Litter and animal fouling is an eyesore, costs millions to clear up and is one of the main reason why the rat population is over 60 million and rising fast. Because of this, the Council has decided to get tough on litter louts and pet owners who fail to clean up after their pets.

As part of the Council's stance on environmental crime, it's Environmental Health Enforcement team is now able to issue £50 fines to people who drop litter (including cigarette ends and chewing gum) and fail to clear up after their pets. Failure to pay a fixed fine could result in prosecution and a fine of up to £2500.

Enforcement Officers operate throughout the District and are in plain clothes. The team may also target motorists who throw litter out of their vehicles or allow their passengers to do so. Car owner's details are obtainable from the DVLA to identify offenders.

It is considered that the main reason people drop litter is because they think they'll never get caught. It is also considered that the best way to beat litter is to hit offenders in their pockets. So North East Derbyshire District Council are doing precisely that in order to ensure the District's streets are clean.
