Closure of Public Conveniences
The public toilets provided by North East Derbyshire District Council have been closed as of from 1st April 2008 as part of a strategy to protect frontline services from cuts.
The Council managed nine public toilets in the district which cost tax payers £130,000 a year to run.
The decision to close the toilets follows a review of services provided by the Council which needs to make substantial savings in order to balance its budget and avoid cuts to frontline services such as refuse collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.
The Council regrets having to make any cuts to the services it provides. However, tough decisions have had to be made about how and where we spend the precious financial resources we have.
In order to balance our budget the Council has had to review all the services it provides to see where efficiencies could be made. Our top priority is to protect frontline services from cuts. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the decision to close public toilets which are costly to maintain and prone to vandalism. However, those savings will be reinvested to maintain services which benefit the wider community.
The Council was also facing a £100,000 bill to bring some of the toilets up to accessibility standards required under the Disability Discrimination Act.
Management of the public toilets located at Moor Road, Ashover is being adopted by the Parish Council. Discussions are ongoing with the other Town and Parish Councils to find out if they would be willing to take on responsibility for the other public toilets (located at: Matlock Road, Ogston; Brackenfield Road, Ogston; Chesterfield Road, Dronfield; Carr Lane, Dronfield; The Ford, Ridgeway; Pinfold Street, Eckington; and Park Side Shopping Centre, Killamarsh) and manage them on a local rather than a district level.
