Coaches and volunteers are the lifeblood of sport, whether it is nationally or at grass roots level. That's why we do everything we can to help people gain the relevant and necessary qualifications to make sure they can deliver organised, safe, fun, progressive and inclusive sessions to participants in our sports and community clubs.
We work in partnership with Derbyshire County Council and Killamarsh Parish Council to provide a Health Referral Programme. The scheme aims to increase exercise and activity in everyday life for people who want to improve their health. It is especially for those people who currently either do no or very little physical activity but who are motivated to do more. Being active each day makes us feel good, boost our confidence and improves our health & wellbeing.
To access the scheme you must visit your surgery and make an appointment with your GP or other health professionals such as practice nurses, weight management advisors, stop smoking advisors, community mental health staff, hospital staff, physiotherapist and together with yourself, will decide whether you can be referred to scheme.
If you are referred, you will be invited to a 1:1 appointment with our Health Referral Officer who will discuss with you about your referral and plan an exercise programme that is best suited to your personal needs and interests with realistic goals agreed. The scheme will last for a 12-week period with your progress and goals assessed after this period. A personal ongoing exercise regime will then be planned to suit your requirements to maintain your new active lifestyle.
We currently offer two sessions per week free of charge for the first 12-weeks. Any additional sessions are charged at a significantly discounted rate to support all, including vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
Our Five:60 scheme aims to help stem the rise in childhood obesity from reception to year 6 children by increasing levels of physical activity and encouraging children, parents and teachers to make the necessary lifestyle changes to become more active and promote the benfits of a well balanced diet.
The activites are led by an exercise and fitness specialist in curriculum time as part of the schools PHSE timetable. The specialist is supported by a teacher during each session who assists in coaching and mentoring participants over a 12-week programme. The exercise and fitness specialist can then refer suitable participants to a special weekly after school Five:60 activity club which will help to signpost interested children and families to other mainstream physical activity sessions.
It is hoped that by the end of the 12-week programme all participants will be undertaking 60 minutes of physical activity a day and eating five portions of fruit and vegetables.

Change 4 Life
Change 4 Life is a campaign that aims to change your habits and live a healthier lifestyle. These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move about as much, or eat as well as we used to. Change4Life provides healthy eating tips, ideas to get active and advice on how to live a healthy life.
Derbyshire Sport provides the strategic lead on sport and recreation across the county of Derbyshire and is committed to working with partners to increase the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity.
The Generation Games project is funded by Derbyshire County Council and is aimed at developing opportunities for older adults and offering support to those wishing to become more active. The scheme will focus on Holmewood and Shirland, details of these can be found using our activities finder on the right of this page.
Support will be available to individuals wishing to become more active through providing information of local activities and offering advice on overcoming barriers to participation. We would also like to hear from clubs and groups in North East Derbyshire wishing to set up new activities.
Coaching Derbyshire aims to develop and support a community of qualified and skilled coaches who can support the overall vision to become one of the most active and successful sporting counties.
