The Council is excited to invest in new technology to help the deaf community use our services. There are 150,000 deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users in the UK.
We would like to consult with the deaf / BSL community to see how to best implement such a service. We want to ensure we minimise barriers to using our services. SignVideo gives deaf people using BSL independence, by allowing them to communicate via a videophone, laptop, PC, smartphone or tablet, enabling deaf BSL users to have equal access to our customer services.
When a BSL user arrives at our reception area at Mill Lane, with the touch of a button a video call connects to a qualified BSL interpreter. Then, the conversation between the service user, reception staff and interpreter can proceed as usual.
