Council lends support to monthly running group

North East Derbyshire District Council is supporting a new running group which meets every month on The Avenue site in Wingerworth. Members of The Avenue 5K and 1,500m meet on the last Sunday of every month at Mill Lane, Wingerworth – opposite The Avenue Washlands Nature Reserve.

Participants can choose to run or walk 5km on The Avenue’s new footpaths. Children can also take part in a shorter 1,500m across the site.

Cllr Graham Baxter MBE, Leader of North East Derbyshire District Council, said: “It’s great The Avenue has now been transformed from one of the most contaminated sites in Europe to a cleaner, more scenic place where people can enjoy the great outdoors.”

The council is supporting The Avenue 5K and 1,500m group by offering free parking at our District Council Offices on Mill Lane.

Our reception is also open during the run for members to use our toilet facilities and enjoy refreshments.

The running group was set up in January and has seen membership slowly increase from 66 participants at the first event, to 76 during the latest run in February.

However, new members are always welcome to join in the timed runs, which start at 10am for the 1,500m and 10.15am for the 5km.

Anyone leaving their vehicle at NEDDC’s District Council Offices is kindly asked to make sure it is removed by 11.30am.

Cannon Events is organising the runs, which cost £4 for 16 years plus, or £3 for children up to 15 years old. (Refreshments are not included in the price) All children under 16 receive a medal for taking part.
