North East Derbyshire District Council has reconfirmed its support to the Armed Forces Community and has received a national award for its efforts.
At its Council meeting on Monday 9 September 2019 the Council’s Armed Forces Champion and Leader, Cllr Martin Thacker MBE, re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant for Derbyshire.
The Covenant is an agreement between local authorities, charities and other agencies who meet at the Derbyshire Covenant Partnership to share best practice and identify services which benefit the Armed Forces Community within the county; supporting the Armed Forces Community is one of the pledges made in the 2019-2023 Council Plan.
Colonel John Wilson OBE DL, the Ministry of Defence’s Regional Employer Engagement Director, then presented the Council with a Bronze Award from the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).
As an employer the Council provides additional support to reservists by offering an additional week’s paid leave for military training and will promote vacancies on the newly established Forces Families Jobs website.
Col Wilson said, “I am pleased to present this award to North East Derbyshire District Council which has demonstrated its commitment to advocating its support to defence and the Armed Forces Community and has aligned its values with the Armed Forces Covenant.”
Cllr Martin Thacker MBE said, “We are committed to developing our support to the Armed Forces Community and to celebrate and commemorate their efforts. We are currently working with our partners to develop initiatives which will be part of a new countywide Covenant Action Plan and arranging VE Day 75 Year Anniversary events for May 2020.
“We are proud to receive the Bronze Award in recognition of the support we provide to our own staff to enable them to provide their personal dedication to the country.”
