Leisure discount scheme extended to include armed forces community

North East Derbyshire District Council’s leisure discount scheme has now been extended to include the armed forces community.

From 1 January 2020, residents of the district who serve, or who have served, in the armed forces will be eligible for a discount at all three of the council’s leisure centres – Dronfield Sports Centre, Eckington Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre and Sharley Park Leisure Centre, Clay Cross.

The concession, which gives access to swimming and the fitness suites at a reduced rate, will be available to residents who provide proof of address and either an:

  • MOD Form 90 (military IDs).
  • Defence Privilege Card.
  • Veteran’s ID Card.

Cllr Barry Lewis, cabinet member for leisure, said: “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our armed forces personnel, so it’s only right we give them something in return.

“By extending our leisure discount scheme to include both serving members and veterans, we can ensure they get the support they deserve.”

The concessionary pass builds on the council’s commitment to support the armed forces community, through the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant.

At a council meeting in September, the Council’s Armed Forces Champion and Leader, Cllr Martin Thacker MBE, re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant for Derbyshire.

The Covenant is an agreement between local authorities, charities and other agencies who meet at the Derbyshire Covenant Partnership to share best practice and identify services which benefit the armed forces community within the county. Supporting the armed forces community is one of the pledges made in the 2019-2023 Council Plan.

Following the re-signing, the council also received a Bronze Award from the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).

In addition to discounts for the armed forces, you may also be eligible for a leisure discount if you are: of state pensionable age, suffering ill health and have been advised to exercise by your doctor, a student (aged 16 or over) or in receipt of certain benefits.
