The Love Your Garden team at ITV visited local hero and war veteran Jack Parrott, 97 of Grassmoor to give his garden a makeover and make it more accessible.
The Love Your Garden Team sought clever ways to create raised beds and patio size greenhouses to allow Jack once again to indulge in his life-long love of gardening.
A D-Day veteran Jack was awarded France’s highest honour, the Legion d’Honneur at a special ceremony in 2019, recognised for his role in Normandy during World War Two.
Jack served with the Sherwood Foresters before joining the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) where he was responsible for the distribution of supplies to units in the field.
In the programme Alan Titchmarsh and his team mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day by remodelling Jack’s garden with the creation or raised beds, colourful flower displays and a fitting wall mural of military aircraft flying over Derwent Dam for Jack to enjoy.
The team also surprise Jack at his local park in Grassmoor. He had been taken out on a vintage motorcycle which arrived at Barnes Park, where Jack was greeted by all his family and friends alongside the Love Your Garden Team and servicemen. A tree was planted by Jack to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, in honour of the Allied Forces who took part in the D-Day landings.
North East Derbyshire District Council's Leader, Councillor Martin Thacker MBE said: “It is fantastic to see local hero, Jack getting his garden re-designed by the Love Your Garden Team. It is important for heroes like Jack to be further recognised for their lifelong efforts for this country and our county. We are extremely proud of Jack and couldn’t be more pleased that this amazing garden make over means he can now enjoy spending time outside in his garden again”.
The programme was aired on ITV on 24 September 2019 at 8 pm and can be viewed again on catch-up services.
